I am seeing too many new people come and and getting confused. Litecoin wiki isn't the greatest when it comes to summing up things so I will try to do things as best as I can. I will attempt to explain from what I have learned and answer some questions. Hopefully people smarter than me will also chime in. I will keep this post updated as much as I can. Preface Litecoin is a type to electronic currency. It is just like Bitcoin but it there are differences. Difference explained here. If you are starting to mine now chances are that you have missed the Bitcoin mining train. If you really want your time and processing power to not go to waste you should mine LTC because the access to BTC from there is much easier. Mining. What is it? Let's get this straight. When making any financial commitment to this be prepared to do it with "throw away" money. Mining is all about the hashrate and is measured in KH/s (KiloHash/sec). Unlike the powerful ASICs (Application Specific Integrated Circuit) that are used to mine bitcoins using hashrates in the GH/s and even TH/s, litecoin mining has only been able to achieve at the very best MH/s. I think the highest I've seen is 130 MH/s so far. Which leads us to our next section. Mining Hardware While CPU mining is still a thing it is not as powerful as GPU mining. Your laptop might be able to get 1 a month. However, I encourage you to consult this list first. List of hardware comparison You will find the highest of processors can maybe pull 100 KH/s and if we put this into a litecoin mining calculator it doesn't give us much. Another reason why you don't want to mine with your CPU is pretty simple. You are going to destroy it. So this leaves us with GPUs. Over the past few months (and years) the HD 7950 has been the favourite because it drains less power and has a pretty good hashrate. But recently the introduction of the R9 290 (not the x) has changed the game a bit. People are getting 850 KH/s - 900 KH/s with that card. It's crazy. Should I mine? Honestly given the current difficulty you can make a solid rig for about $1100 with a hashrate of 1700 KH/s which would give you your investment back in about a month and a half. Estimated Hashrate (with GPU overclocking) : 1900 KH/s Hardware Fundamentals CPU - Do you need a powerful CPU? No but make sure it is a decent one. AMD CPUs are cheap to buy right now with tons of power. Feel free to use a Sempron or Celeron depending on what Motherboard you go with. RAM - Try to get at least 4 GB so as to not run into any trouble. Memory is cheap these days. I am saying 4 GB only because of Windoze. If you are plan to run this on Linux you can even get away with less memory. HDD Any good ol 7200 RPM hard drive will do. Make sure it is appropriate. No point in buying a 1TB hard drive. Since, this is a newbie's guide I assumed most won't know how to run linux, but incase you do you can get a USB flash drive and run linux from it thus removing the need for hard drive all toghether. (thanks dystopiats) GPU - Consult the list of hardware of hardware I posted above. Make sure you consider the KH/s/W ratio. To me the 290 is the best option but you can skimp down to 7950 if you like. PSU - THIS IS BLOODY IMPORTANT. Most modern GPUs are power hungry so please make sure you are well within the limits of your power consumption. MOTHERBOARD - Ok, so a pretty popular board right now is Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 and the ASRock 970 Extreme4. Some people are even going for Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD5 and even the mighty Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD7 because it has more PCI-E slots. 6 to be exact. However you may not need that much. With risers you can get more shoved into less. PCI-E RISERS - These are called risers. They come in x16 to x16 and x1 to x16 connections. Here is the general rule of thumb. This is very important. Always get a POWERED riser otherwise you will burn a hole in your MoBo. A powered rise as a molex connector so that additional power from PSU can be supplied. When it comes to hardware I've provided the most basic knowledge you need. Also, take a look at cryptobader's website. This is very helpful. Please visit the mining section of Litecoin Forums and the litecoinmining subreddit for more indepth info. Mining Software Now that you have assembled your hardware now you need to get into a pool. But before you do that you need a mining software. There are many different ones but the one that is most popular is cgminer. Download it and make sure you read the README. It is a very robust piece of software. Please read this if you want to know more. (thanks BalzOnYer4Head) Mining Pools Now that your hardware and software is ready. I know nothing about solo mining other than the fact that you have to be very lucky and respectable amount of hashing power to decrypt a block. So it is better to join pools. I have been pool hopping for a bit and really liked give-me-coin previously known to the community as give-me-ltc. They have a nice mobile app and 0% pool fees. This is really a personal preference. Take a look at this list and try some yourself. How do I connect to a pool? Most pools will give you a tutorial on how to but the basics are as follows:
Signup for a pool
Create a worker for your account. Usually one worker per rig (Yes people have multiple rigs) is generally a good idea.
Create a .run file. Open up notepad and type cgminer.exe -o (address_to_the_miningpool:port_number) -u (yourusername.workername) -p (your_worker_password_if_you_made_one). Then File>Save As>runcgminer.run (Make sure the drop down is set to "All Files" and .txt document.) and save in the same folder as cgminer. That's it.
Double click on runcgminer.run (or whatever you named it) and have fun mining.
Mining Profitability This game is not easy. If it was, practically everyone would be doing it. This is strictly a numbers game and there are calculations available that can help you determine your risk on your investments. 4 variables you need to consider when you are starting to mine: Hardware cost: The cost of your physical hardware to run this whole operation. Power: Measured in $/KwH is also known as the operating cost. Difficulty rate: To put it in layman's terms the increase in difficulty is inversely proportional to amount of coin you can mine. The harder the difficulty the harder it is to mine coin. Right now difficulty is rising at about 18% per 3 days. This can and will change since all you miners are soon going to jump on the band wagon. Your sanity: I am not going to tell you to keep calm and chive on because quiet frankly that is stupid. What I will tell you not to get too carried away. You will pull you hair out. Seriously. Next thing you will need is a simple tool. A mining profitability calculator. I have two favourite ones. coinwarz I like this one cause it is simple. The fields are self explanatory. Try it. bitcoinwisdom I like this one because it is a more real life scenario calculator and more complicated one (not really). It also takes increasing difficulty into account. As title described, I bought a sapphire 7950 3gb about a month ago and had noticed the prices getting a bit crazy. Can anyone offer any advice on what to do? I have considered selling it on eBay and upgrading. It's this something I should do ASAP? I know it's because they are good for bitcoin mining, but not much else. EDIT: Everyone, I totally f'd up on GPU's that I would have by end of June. I just wrote a quick VBS script that shows I'll only have 22 (15+7) by end of June. Not too shabby, but definitely not 48. Just wanted to post an update. Feel free to use the script! So I've posted here a few times in the past. Now I'll detail what I'm doing a little further and try to help others. Right now I'm working with 5x 7950's, 3x 7850's, a 6750, and 3x GTX 580's (my gaming rig). My hash rate is about 4,500 MH/s. I started this project using the DRIP (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dividend_reinvestment_plan) principles in mind. I call this MRIP (Mining Reinvestment Plan). The plan is to reinvest all bitcoins mined into more mining hardware. Today I just purchased two more 7950's that are due to arrive tomorrow. Note that these two cards were purchased with bitcoins that were mined. This should bring my hash rate up to about 5660 MH/s, which will let me purchase another card next monday. The plan is every time I have enough to buy another card, I withdraw the bitcoins and convert it into cash. At this rate I'm hoping to have about 48 additional 7950 cards by the end of June or about 33,000 MH/s (33GH/s). To those I haven't gotten back with about hardware that I'm ordering, I do apologize. I'm using ported 7950's. I STRESS ported cards (ported on top, other on bottom) because they throw the heat out of the chassis. When clustering 12 cases together (4x12=48 cards) it's not ideal to "just leave the side off and hope it's cool it enough". These cases will be slammed up against each other. Going to back to hardware, I still haven't decided on a locked feature set - meaning I don't know what I'm going to buy (mobo, ram, cpu, psu, etc). Ideally I want to keep the core system down to about $70/PCI-e slot, but I have to factor in space (hashing density too). I say this because hardware pricing is always changing, but I want to lock the specs down eventually because it'll be easy to administer. Having 12 like systems will be easier to deploy than 12 totally different systems (all I have to do is image them). Being a net/sys admin I'll probably administer them with a PXE boot image (which I plan on making that publicly available along with the system specs). Anyways I apologize about that. I run an IT consulting company on the side and thus I have A CRAP LOAD of old machines with a working PCI-e slot (or two or three). I'll be using these up and then will start building out a system. Going back to mining, I'm not sure what ASIC's have in store for us. The difficulty could rise so much that by end of June I only have 4 more GPUs instead of 48. My hope is that the difficulty will not go up that high as ASIC's are still very hard to come by and really don't make a good investment case right now (or then). Looking at the difficulty graphs, TH/s seem to be leveling off in the near future - but only time will tell! Let me know if this helps! So over the last week or so I've become more and more interested in starting up mining again (last done this years and years ago, bitcoin mining ofc) but I have to be honest I have forgotten pretty much everything. The technology has also moved on from back then when and I'm currently looking at getting a little rig together for about £800. 2x Sapphire Radeon HD 7950 3GB I've been looking at https://github.com/litecoin-project/litecoin/wiki/Mining-hardware-comparison to see what the average kH/s is and then calculating the gross profit on http://www.litecoinpool.org/calc?hashrate=1100&difficulty=153.16808633 Now I know that the difficulty won't stay at this rate for very long but from what I can see you can make the money back within a month? Surely I must be missing something here.

I recently bought a 2nd 7950 (same exact card) but have yet to put it in my system since i would need a more powerful power supply. My question is, should i sell my 7950's and use the money from that and what i saved by not buying a new power supply to buy a 780? I currently use my computer for a decent amount of gaming on 2 1080p monitors and also do quite a bit of video editing on Adobe Premiere CC (which takes advantage of dual GPU's). I should mention, I also have been considering Bitcoin mining, but do not know anything about it or if it is worth it. Power use is also a concern for me since I will be moving into an apartment not too far into the future where I will have to pay the electricity bill (currently live in a dorm where that is included) and I am kind of tight on money. So should I keep the 7950's and buy a power supply or sell them and get a 780?
The problem began after the cpu/mobo/mem swap on 3/24. It generally has happened while I've been bitcoin mining, however it was present with my previous Nvidia GTX 580 and now with the AMD 7950, so I don't believe the video is causing it. Last night was the first time I observed it happening, every other time has been while I was away from my computer. My system hung, screen flickered, then Windows returned with Aero disabled similar to a video driver crash, about two seconds later I got a blue screen and the system rebooted to the no boot device error screen. A power cycle did not correct the issue, but a full power drain brought it back online and it ran fine the rest of the night. I'm suspicious of heat, because I'm always suspicious of heat, but the case is well ventilated and dust free. I've checked the connections and verified there wasn't one that was loose. At this point I'm leaning towards a motherboard RMA. I've never seen bad memory cause a boot issue like that.. but thought I would post an overly detailed explanation in case anyone else had thoughts they wanted to weigh in on.

Changes: 1) First change I had was i had a corsair tx750 and it was making quite an annoying coil whine. Corsair had very good customer service and accepted my RMA and had a new one back to me shortly. However instead of continuing to use that power supply I picked up the xfx on sale for around $89 down from its much higher regular price. I then sold the corsair to pay for new power supply. 2) Added some case fans. Added 2 blue coolermaster fans because there was a good sale on them. I'm not to focused on CPU overclocking anymore so i stuck them on the CPU cooler for a nice cool effect. Also added a delta fan. IT.IS.LOUD. But that's why you buy it. It creates a massive amount of air flow and i needed that for the summer heat. 3) Added sleeved cable extensions. These things are great! They allowed me to get my cpu power behind the mobo as before a 8 pin connector wouldn't fit around the top, but with the cord having a 4+4 instead, it was able to go through the back. Also allowed me to get the motherboard cable behind tray as the xfx's motherboard cable is very short. They look awesome and improve air flow. 4) Added a second 7950. I wanted to do a little bit of bitcoin mining so I decided to pick up a second card. As the card was running too hot i moved it down a slot. While i no longer have crossfire, temps dropped about 15C. Some advice: If you dont need something right away. Look for a sale! Sales saved me so much money on this build! Im glad i waited for sales instead of buying right away.

SOLD Both rigs runs Windows and comes with the installation disc (Dell branded), but I was running a live Debian-based OS from a USB drive that will be included (4gb). It supports litecoin and bitcoin, and even the USB ASIC block erupters. It has remote monitoring support, which is mainly why I used it. Will accept litecoin, bitcoin, Paypal, Dwolla, or Wells Fargo transfers. I would rather not ship outside the USA or part out. If no one is interested here, I will likely just list them on eBay.
Ok so I have found a guy in my city selling a Powercolor 7950 for 225. He says he used it for bitcoin mining and stopped and hes selling it because he just cashed out and he is moving. Here are my concerns:
Its been used for mining, and while I know bitcoin is not mem intensive, its still mining (seller claims around 6 months of mining).
Its a reference powercolor with another cooler installed and new thermal paste, (guy claims 68c temps consistently) and I do not know the specific model.
I have a 650w PSU its a rosewill capstone (~91% efficiency at 50-80% load) 80+ gold, its about 11 months old. The reason I say this is that my irg already has a 7970 inside and i'm drawing about 290 watts from the wall total (7970 is undervolted as well as my 3770k). even if this card adds 250w overclocked, im still at only 540w pulling from the wall but realistically I will probably undervolt the card to keep temps down.
Is this a good deal and should I jump on it? EDIT** I decided against buying based on my PSU. I have redirected the seller to hardware swap and this sub in hopes he can still sell the card, but I am not sure he will try selling here. EDIT 2 I Found a Sapphire 7970 Vapor-X card for 300$!!! this card I know I can undervolt and I will be purchasing that instead

I started mining with my one 7950 a little while ago, since then I have around $200 worth of coins. I want to build a rig in the near, future and maybe use only the money I get from mining, so it may take a little while. I want to build a rig with 4 R9 270's and then add 2 more later. I have to buy all my parts in Canada because even if I can get them from USA, there maybe warranty issues.I can get sapphire 270x's for $250 and then sell off the BF4 codes. I don't know what motherboard to get? Any suggestions? The Asrock bitcoin one is out of stock everywhere. Also while a 750w power supply be enough? Is bronze rated good enough, or is it safer to go with gold?

Helllo, i'v recently started looking into LTC mining. i missed the boat on bitcoin. Now i have the feeling if i don't do this i might miss out again. I'v tried to set my Geforce GTX 660 TI to mine with cudaminer. Ofcourse i'm not making any profit considering i'm only getting 85khash/s. i'd like to build a semi budget mining rig. Containing. 2x sapphire Vapor-x 7950 and all the other parts cheapest i can find. I do not have to pay for my electricity bill. And it is oke for my parents if i do this. the reason i'm stil not sure is. If it is realy worth it? On difrent calculators its showing me i'l earn around 500-700 euro / month. the rig will cost me around 750-900euro. ( i already have a MOBO + powersuply from my old gaming pc)
I'm having a pretty strange issue. Up until a few months ago I was mining bitcoins using cgminer just fine. I stopped because it became entirely unprofitable. I decided this week to start mining litecoins and read up on what I needed. I created a new cgminer folder specifically for litecoin with a different version number of cgminer to avoid any conflicts. I eventually got it all ready and went to run cgminer and as soon as I double clicked the batch file I made it cause a BSOD. The message with the BSOD is "Bad_Pool_Header". I thought that I may have had some incorrect flags in my batch file or maybe I was trying to push it too hard. I decided to see what would happen if I tried to run my old bitcoin mining config and it too instantly causes a BSOD. The only thing I can think of that has changed about my system is that I got a new PC case and changed the slot the graphics card was in, but I removed all the drivers and re-installed them when I did that. From here things only get weirder. I had been on Catalyst 13.12 and decided to downgrade to 13.1 to see if that would help. That didn't do anything so I decided to see if I could get guiminer going just to see if it was all miners. I tried to start guiminer and it instantly gave me a "guiminer has stopped working" message. Long story short when I downgraded my drivers 13.1 refused to install openCl properly even after several reinstall attempts. I updated to 13.4 and now openCL is fine and guiminer works just fine using cgminer 3.7.2. However, when I attempt to run cgminer itself I still get a BSOD. I can't understand why when I run a freshly unpacked cgminer I get a BSOD, but if I run guiminer and it uses cgminer it works fine. I'm pretty content with guiminer, but want to figure out what the issue is just in case it may cause other issues later. Has anyone ever heard of anything like this before? First and foremost, this computer is intended to hold me over for the next few years until I am commissioned into the United States Air Force. Here is a list of different things that this computer will be used for:
Goldfarming. Wait! What's that? Well... goldfarming is where you run a "bot" (or macro) to obtain in-game currency. Then, with that in-game currency from the bot, I sell to the general public for good 'ole real-life currency, preferrably USD.
Gaming. Nothing too major, just something to do every now and then.
Programming. I am, and plan on, taking computer programming classes while I am here at college.
Now that I am done with what "society" has wanted me to do, by telling you the Gaming-Aspect of this computer's usage, I will continue.
Entertainment. Yes, entertainment. This includes, but does not limit to, movies, music, and whatever else your minds can think of.
I've also been thinking of running some BitCoin Mining/LiteCoin Mining in the background, figured it can't hurt. I know it's "late in the game," but it's whatever. I don't pay for electricity. (Either I am at home, where the MILITARY pays for my electricity, or I am at school, where the UNIVERSITY pays for it.) Any questions, comments, concerns, or general feedback? The statement in quotations is not to discourage you from suggesting better parts. Try and keep the budget to $1000, I have no room to go over that amount. The RAM will be used, so it's needed. I changed the GPU to a Sapphire brand because the Gigabyte card was sold out at both vendors.

Artifacts with Radeon 7950. Should I RMA my Graphics Card?
(Specs and relevant info at the bottom) Hello, I've been experiencing artifacts for some time now, but on rare ocassions. For example, I can be playing for 3 hours with OK temperatures (say 65ºC / 149ºF) with no problems and suddenly, with no temperature change, a flickering square (sometimes just 1, sometimes 2; compossed of smaller squares) appears on the screen and always around the same location. This is what it looks like: Example 1. Example 2. As you can see in the second video, the max temperature was 67ºC (152ºF) which triggered the artifact, and it stayed there until I alt+tabbed. That is always the case. There was one time when the artifacts were even worse: Example 3. There doesn't seem to be a temperature threshold at which this starts to happen. I tried to get started today in GPU bitcoin mining, and I got artifacts on firefox even before the program had time to heat up the GPU (black squares in the tab section, distorted menus). As soon as I stopped, they dissappeared. I am generally able to play for quite some time with no apparent problems some pretty gpu intensive games (trine 2, skyrim, far cry 3...), but when I less expect it... there it is, that friggin flickering square that solves itselft just alt+tabbing. Awkwardly enough, I tried running FurMark and even though it got to 76ºC (169ºF) there was not any apparent artifact in the render (there were artifacts in firefox tho). So these are the facts, now I'll tell you my specs:

Hi all, I am looking to build my first computer and would love to get your expert input. For the sake of putting all the information out there, I copied my post from Tom's Hardware, so it's a bit lengthy. Approximate Purchase Date: ASAP. Budget Range: Around 1500 USD. System Usage from Most to Least Important: 1a. research/data work/programming (python, MATLAB, etc.), 1b. trading (possibly algorithm-based but not like high-frequency), and 2. general use. Are you buying a monitor: No. I have 4 Dell 2007FP monitors that I would like to use w/ this system. Do you need to buy OS: Yes. Preferred Website(s) for Parts: No preference. Location: Cambridge, MA. Parts Preferences: No preference. Overclocking: No (maybe out of curiosity in the future). SLI or Crossfire: No (maybe out of curiosity in the future). Your Monitor Resolution: 1600x1200. I have a few specific questions:
Is there a need for an aftermarket CPU cooler, or will the stock device be sufficient (given that I won’t be overclocking)?
My impression is that the motherboard doesn’t have wireless capabilities (correct me if I’m wrong). If so, what wireless adapter should I get?
Windows 7 or Windows 8? I know that there is a lot of debate about this. If it doesn’t really matter for my purposes, then I plan to go with Windows 8 for the simple reason that it seems more future-proof (by definition).
Graphics card. I realize that it may be too much for what I plan to do esp. since I don’t game much, but I do need to be able to support the 4 Dell 2007FP monitors. Last night I also realized that I could just use the card to mine bitcoins/litecoins most of the time, which is why I made a last minute switch from the GTX 670, which apparently is bad at mining. In light of these comments, do you think the card is appropriate?
